Story & Mission:

“Connecting People to Jesus”

On September 24, 1972, 111 disciples gathered at Kennedy Elementary School in Mankato, MN to worship together for the first time. Those disciples selected the name Hosanna Lutheran Church and shortly thereafter 28 families became charter members of Hosanna. Pastor Bruce Zagel served as the first pastor of Hosanna Lutheran Church, and he and his family tended to Hosanna until 1977.

In June, 1974, Hosanna Lutheran Church became a voting member of the Minnesota South District of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. One week later, ground was broken for a church building. Due to the increasing number of Hosanna disciples, Hosanna added on to the facilities in 1992 and 1998. A larger sanctuary was added in 2010.

Pastor Bruce Zagel, Pastor Merle Kitzmann, Pastor Eugene Glade, Pastor Steve Kosberg, Pastor Andy Ritchie, Pastor Mike Tindall and Pastor Dan Weise, along with their families, have been called to serve at Hosanna Lutheran Church through the years. Currently, Pastor Dennis Heiden, Pastor Steve Kosberg (part-time), Pastor Darren Scruggs, Pastor Michael Omtvedt, and Pastor Adam Parvey, along with a ministry staff of 30+ and a governance board of eleven elected disciples, lead and guide the approximately 6000 baptized disciples in connecting people to Jesus.

Connecting people to Jesus means living Christ—Christ in us—and loving others by joining Jesus in what He is already doing in the lives of the people around us.

Connecting people to Jesus enables them to live in His promises—to supply our every need (Philippians 4:19); to forgive our sins (1 John 1:9 ); to give us salvation by His grace (Ephesians 2:8); to deliver us from the evil one (1 Corinthians 10:13 ); to live each day and eternally with Him (John 10:27-28).

And while Hosanna strives to connect others to Jesus and His promises, it is Jesus Himself who makes all things possible:

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” 1 Peter 1:3.
